Lena Carlsson is professor of clinical metabolic research at the Wallenberg Laboratory and co-director of the strategic research center Sahlgrenska Center for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Research.
Since 2005, Professor Carlsson’s research team has led the Swedish Obese Subjects (SOS) study, the only prospective controlled trial in the world with long-term follow up of the effects of bariatric surgery on obese patients. The ongoing SOS study was initiated in 1987, and includes 2010 surgically treated obese subjects and 2037 obese, matched controls.
Professor Carlsson’s research is focused on the long-term effects of bariatric surgery and elucidating the genes and molecular mechanisms involved in the development of obesity and associated metabolic diseases.
